Chief Derrick Lawalin joined TCPD in 2001 as a reserve officer. Chief Lawalin began serving as a full-time officer in 2002. Chief Lawalin’s experience includes nine years as a canine handler. He also served as Detective before being promoted to Chief of Police in 2015. Chief Lawalin holds a Criminal Justice Degree from Vincennes University and instructor certifications in Traffic stop safety and response to active shooters. Chief Lawalin was named MADD Officer of the Year in 2005 and received a Meritorious Service Award in 2010. In addition, Chief Lawalin is a two time recipient of the “Life saving Medal”.
